A beautiful day in May. I stepped outside and it was actually warm, for the first time that I can actually remember this year. It was a day for a walk, despite feeling all headachey. In fact, because I felt all headachy. Headache didn’t go away, but I felt better.

Happiness is the unexpected

Went to the Glasgow Science Centre but we were too late for the planetarium show. Instead we went for a wander, first towards the tower, and then back over the Millennium Bridge and along to the Tall Ship, dragging two disappointed kids with us. And then, sublime events unfolded: Bell’s Bridge opened to let the [...]
First find of the holidays

The school holidays are here at last so we head off for a walk round Bothwell Castle, then down onto the Clyde Walkway. Spotted an inscription commemorating the high point of the Clyde on March 12th, 1732. Not particularly interesting until you realise that the Clyde is about 10 feet away and another 10 feet [...]

Went to Palacerigg with brother and family. My head hurts if I have to bend down so I’ve decided against doing that. Makes it awkward to tie shoelaces but I’d rather trip than feel my brain trying to push through my skull. Got to Palacerigg along some rather wonderfully crunchy roads before we found the [...]

So we made plans to go down the Clyde Valley, stopping for a wander in every wee place we came to. Didn’t happen. Put the window down in the car and it refused to go back up again. Didn’t get going until after lunch (and only after a visit from the latest in a very [...]

A great drive down the A71 to Kilmarnock where we drove around looking to find anything as modern as a fastfood place – unfortunately one of the few things the kids will eat. Kilmarnock on a Sunday brunchtime is quiet. Quest completed, we continued on the way to Dundonald Castle, which turned out to have an [...]

On this lovely Spring day I put the car window down and sang acapella on the way home. Nothing wrong with that, until I caught myself trying to turn the volume up … Just as well I’ve got some days off, starting with a wee wander along the Glen to Flatt Bridge and back, being regularly passed [...]
The bump in the road – solved?

We went for a wee walk today and wandered past where the bump in the road would have been, so we decided to look closer. On the map aerial view there are some trees, but only at ground level was it obvious that this was a remnant of the hedging running on either side of [...]

I’m really excited about an article I’ve just seen on the Scotland Outdoors website. I love their podcast and was exploring the articles on the website when I noticed one called Charles Jencks landscape artist. I really like a lot of the land art that I’ve seen, although unfortunately it’s mostly been online or in [...]
Walk along the Wall I

It’s been interesting re-reading Hunter Davies’ book recording his walk along Hadrian’s Wall in 1974 to see how things have changed since then. First stop is Wallsend. In Davies’ book, Segedunum fort is still covered by terraced houses. Now the fort has been excavated, and an award winning museum stands beside it. Later on his [...]
