Glow has had to take a back seat for a while, but I’ve had a chance to do a bit more exploring tonight. I’ve discovered some strange things have been happening. I’ve been allocated my SCA username / password, but wasn’t told about it. The new username also has my name spelt correctly, but I can’t get the old one changed. Should I just use the new for everything? Questions to be asked.
Anyway, we’re still at the planning stage in school, with a meeting later this week to look at the set up. Once that’s done I can start creating – or can I?
I’ve still not received Glow Learn training, with no sign of it on the horizon. Until I’ve done that, I don’t know the best way to build the information onto Glow. Plus, given the current levels of technology in the school, I’m wary of adding materials onto Glow unless I know for definite that the pupils will be in front of a smartboard or at a computer. Plus, I’ve got website and the blog to add materials to…
It’s a mindset I’ve got to get out of. Glow may not be all singing, all dancing, yet, but it will continue to grow and improve and develop. It really needs some drastic updating though. And a makeover.
Current thoughts:
- History/Mystery: some of the information literacy lessons could go onto Glow, but then it’s already in place as a powerpoint. I could just upload the ppt, but to be honest, it works far better through Co-operative Learning than as individualised lessons. I need to see Glow Learn to know how it’ll help.
- Sensory Garden haikus: this would be a simple first step , because it’s just a couple of weblinks, but then I wonder if it’s worth it. Given the way the project developed, it might be worth adding purely to see how it grows.
- Filamentality: if I’m adding weblinks, then all the Filamentality hotlists can be transferred. But Glow doesn’t seem to really lend itself to webquests and treasure hunts – or maybe that’s what Glow Learn is about. Again I’m stuck.
- Discrimination: still trying to find time to have a meeting to discuss this project (only managed to meet twice since December). We can certainly add material onto a Glow group on this topic in the meantime.
- Discursive essays: this idea is appealing. Loads of room for discussion, links, video etc. I think this might be worth having a go at first, and it’s a way in for the English department.
Now I just need the school site to be organised so that I can put things in the right places. I will be a happy person when Glow allows me to move things from one folder to another.

Read your posting with interest. Don’t know if you are in contact with any of the Glow Mentors who are school librarians and interested in information literacy (Elspeth Scott, Dundee or Carol Stewart, Stirling) but it would be worth while you having a chat with them about your thoughts and find out what they are doing as they have been active / busy in this area. Also as a mentor they have more experince and expertise with the ins and outs of Glow. if you need their contact details let me know.

Hi Christine,
I am actually a Glow mentor and am very involved with Information Literacy. I’ve been in touch with Elspeth for a while now, and I’m already a member of the Dundee Group. There are certainly lots of interesting possibilities within Glow, but there’s a lot that needs updated as well.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and apologies for the delay in replying.
